The Israel Prize laureate for 2025 in the field of Engineering Research and Engineering Sciences is Prof. Yonina Eldar from the Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Department at the Weizmann Institute of Science – as announced today by Education Minister Yoav Kish on behalf of the prize committee headed by Prof. Arnon Bentur, with the participation of members Prof. Yael Edan and Prof. Ami Moyal. The prize will be awarded to Eldar at the traditional ceremony on the upcoming Independence Day.
“A groundbreaking scientist with a global reputation in the field of signal processing and information processing,” was written about Prof. Eldar in the Ministry of Education’s announcement.
“Prof. Eldar’s main research area deals with the development of algorithms for signal processing, information processing and artificial intelligence. In recent years, she has focused on efficient sampling methods, signal processing and optimization in communication, radar and medical imaging systems, artificial intelligence, signal processing for optics and computational biology. She challenged the classic ‘sampling theorem’ and developed innovative theories that make it possible to reduce sampling rates without losing information – an insight that has changed the way many systems are designed in the field of engineering,” the announcement further stated.

The prize committee also noted her social contribution: “Prof. Eldar is an active contributor to the advancement of Israeli society and equal opportunities in academia – promoting women and people with physical and mental disabilities. She is an example and role model of a scientist who combines groundbreaking research with the ability to apply it and have a broad social impact across all sectors of society.”
Eldar joined the Weizmann Institute faculty in 2019 as a full professor. Prior to that, she was a faculty member at the Technion in Haifa. She was born in Toronto and immigrated to Israel at the age of six. She has two bachelor’s degrees from Tel Aviv University – in physics and electrical engineering, and a doctorate in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Eldar is a prolific author, and throughout her career she has received numerous prizes and awards for academic and scientific excellence, including the 2023 Landau Prize for Arts and Sciences, awarded by the National Lottery, in the field of mathematical research. In 2012, she was elected to serve on the Council for Higher Education, and in 2017 she was accepted into the ranks of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
